Wole Soyinka Metamodernism and Liminality A Scourge of Hyacinths and From Zia with Love

written by Dr. Kemi Atanda Ilori

A review of (or essay about)

Wole Soyinka won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986. In Wole Soyinka – Metamodernism & Liminality, Soyinka’s theatre is explored against the theoretical and social premiss of metamodernism in Soyinka’s A Scourge of Hyacinths and From Zia, with Love. In addition to considering the dramaturgical sensibilities of Soyinka’s plays, there is an in-depth exploration of the staging mechanics of these plays. In particular, Barthes’s poststructuralism, Foucault’s notions of power, and core aspects of performativity and intertextuality, alongside Soyinka’s “fourth stage” are the main theoretical grounds for this study.
